SEG A/S

HOFOR Fjernkøle A/S, Copenhagen

Project purpose and mode of operation:

To produce district cooling (cold water) for businesses around Kongens Nytorv. The cooling center at Adelgade has a cooling capacity of approx. 18 MW, where the options are free cooling (direct cooling using seawater), absorption cooling (surplus heat from Amagerværket) and finally compressor cooling. The absorption heat pump installed at Adelgade has a cooling capacity of 3.4 MW.

The absorption heat pump's chilled water circuit produces cold water down to around 5°C. The evaporator in the chilled water circuit is directly connected to the district cooling network. The heated return district cooling water is led back to the absorption heat pump evaporator, which transfers the energy to the heat pump absorber. The absorber is flushed with seawater, which in series with the heat pump condenser releases the heat into the sea. The heat pump's absorber and condenser are titanium tubes to withstand seawater. The heat pump is driven by steam at 8 bar, which means that the electricity consumption for such a machine is minimal.

SEG A/S role:

To deliver, install and commission an absorption heat pump for the customer HORFOR and train the operating staff in the use of the machine.

COWI was the consultant on the assignment.

Description of the project content:

The absorption heat pump consists of the following areas;

  • Project planning and energy calculations for the absorption heat pump.
  • Absorption heat pump with associated components.
    • One Thermax absorption heat pump type SD 70B CX, dimensioned to provide 3.4 MW cooling.
