Renova Waste Incineration Gothenburg

PHASE I, GOTHENBURG - FLUE GAS CONDENSATION

Purpose: Replacement of 13MW heat pumps at waste incineration plant

Renova was one of the first in Europe to have absorption heat pumps installed in 1984. After almost 35 years of continuous operation, the original Sanyo heat pumps have been replaced with two Thermax absorption heat pumps with a total cooling capacity of 13MW.

The cooling side of the heat pump delivers cold water to the flue gas scrubber, which reduces the chimney temperature to around 25°C, thereby recovering most of the energy in the flue gases.

The recovered energy is transferred in the condenser and absorber circuit to the district heating return water, which is preheated before being delivered to the waste incineration boilers. This significantly increases the output of the boilers.

SEG's role in the project has been the design, delivery and commissioning of the heat pumps in Gothenburg. The pumps were put into operation in July 2018.

This project was the first phase of a renovation of Renova's heat pump installation and will be followed by a phase II of similar scope in 2019.
